This eight-part vinyl series shares the narrative-rich world of Swiss Hip-Hop artist and filmmaker Varnish La Piscine. His work leans into futurism, situational emotion, and the absurd humor of everyday life. The project spans his discography and arthouse music videos, with visual storytelling shaped by three main characters from his short films: a spy, a robot gang member, and a fisherman.
Music box is a sourced metal film storage from the 50s-60s, with genuine reel containers. Record covers inspired by real-world Black leaders from the Film and Cold War eras, filtered through an editorial collage style influenced by designers Cristiana Couceiro and the McQuades.
Collection booklet bound with metal fasteners and a transparent film overlay, creating a kineograph animation from a single frame of Eadweard Muybridge's "The Horse in Motion.” It's widely regarded as the first motion picture, featuring Black jockey Domingo ‘Go West’ Johnson. One of many Black riders who were prominent in early horse racing.
Content sourced from film texture libraries, Swiss design libraries, 1940s Cold War documentation, and fishing union photography. Fall 2024 academic project.
